Can you Think your Skin Better?
Would you believe that rather than spending fortunes on expensive skin-care products, women (and men) can actually improve their own skin condition by simply using their mind?
Impossible?
Well, it’s not as hard to do as you may think. Read on and let us explain.
In his cell cloning experiments in 1967 Professor Bruce Lipton revealed that the environment we live in (equivalent to the culture medium in a petri-dish in a research laboratory), controls the cell’s genetics. He explained that our bodies are the equivalent of a skin-covered culture dish containing around 50 trillion cells. The blood is the body’s “culture medium,” and the chemistry of the blood environment “controls” the genetic activity of our cells through a process referred to as epigenetics.
It was quite a statement for him to make and while it shook the scientific world to the core, let us in simple terms explain what he said, and how we can use his discovery in our every-day life:
What Bruce was explaining was that we have control over our own destiny – and it’s our minds that are the facilitator. What we see with our eyes, passes to our brain, then our mind, and the mind in turn sends the communication messages (via our blood) down inside us to our individual cells.
Whether we make healthy or diseased versions of our cells is controlled by our blood’s chemistry. And if the brain is the source of that chemistry, the most important question we have to ask is, “How do we control the brain such that it puts the right messages into the blood?” The answer is again, profound. The brain translates our consciousness into complimentary chemistry. For example, a picture of love in the mind causes the brain to release dopamine (pleasure), oxytocin (bonding), and growth hormone (enhances body health) into the blood, all of which leads to vibrant health and happiness. However, if the mind holds a picture of fear, instead of “love” chemistry, the brain release stress hormones that shut down the system’s growth and immune functions and prepares the body for flight or fight behaviours – and in this, it affects our skin too.
The Buddha summarised this whole process 2,500 years ago in a simple offering, “What we think, we become.”The function of the mind is to translate our beliefs into reality by programming our behaviour to match our thoughts.
So, here are some questions to ask yourself about your own skin:
Are all of these so-called miracle creams a waste of money?
Would I like to have perfect health – and perfect skin?
Is any of this achievable just by focussing my mind?
With regard to the skincare lotions that you buy, the first thing you have to remind yourself is that the skin is the largest organ in our body. It’s 1000 open mouths waiting to absorb what we put on it, be it good or bad. So, it is best to make the right choices by buying skincare products from companies such as Essence of Egypt, who use clean, natural ingredients. It’s where you will find products that are made by companies who care about their customers, and are willing to interact with them, to their benefit.
If you believe what we write to be true, then the possibility of helping your skin through positive thinking is indeed helpful. When you’re happy, relaxed and free of stress, the body can accomplish amazing, even miraculous, feats of self-repair. In this state of relaxation, errors in our DNA get fixed; enzymes catalyse the repair process in our skin, while our immune cells get busy eating up infectious agents. In addition, free radicals that cause so much damage in lots of areas of our bodies, bite the dust as our repair cells spring to the rescue. In other words, the body is a miracle waiting to happen, if only you would give it a little bit of help to do so.
Next up is Gratitude. When you focus on gratitude, positive things flow in more readily into your life, making you even more grateful. And as long as you keep your gratitude vessel full, you’ll avoid the unhealthy plunge into dark places. The body is after all the physical manifestation of the sum of your life experiences. So, every day, it is important to spend a little time being grateful. Even simple things such as the lady who smiled at you and said “good morning,” can do. It didn’t rain, and my washing was dry when you got home for work, are all worthy of a grateful thought.
With these first two important matters completed, let us focus on other self-healing treatments that you can do to help your skin and the whole of your body.
Changing your diet: The majority of recommended eating diets that we have read over consists primarily of whole vegetables, fruits, grains, and beans, as well as eliminating meat, sugar, dairy, and processed food.
Feeling love, joy and happiness: Having these attributes in your life increases the ability to self-heal. So, every morning when you’re working, don’t think of yesterday and all of the horrible things that happened during the day. Just think of what’s ahead of you. Positive things. Have a smile and think of all the people who love you. Then think of the ones that you love. There are more than you think, if you put your mind to it. Make it the first thing that you do when you waken every day. By thinking and saying these words to yourself, you send positive messages to the microscopic cells deep inside you.
Forgiving everyone who has ever hurt you: This could be quite a challenge for some folks, but believe us, it is achievable. We found it difficult to do, but eventually with a little bit of practice and biting our own tongue, we achieved it. Here’s how to do it: At night when you’re in bed have a think about all the different people who have walked over you, hurt you, made your life difficult. You probably will have a list. Then taking your time, one by one think about each and every one of them individually, and forgive them for what they did to you; no matter how rotten they may have been. It’s something that you will have to work at, and it may take many nights, but if you stick at it, you will reach an end point. Then, with forgiveness in your heart, and your life, your skin will begin to glow. More importantly will increase the length of your telomeres (see our article of 5 June 2025).
Believe in the law of attraction: Every day, find a few moments to sit quietly. Close your eyes and say to yourself that “everything always turns out right for me.” When you have this positive mindset, you have no idea what might happen in your life. The spot on your face might disappear with the wrinkles too. Your health might improve to the point where something that’s been troubling you for months suddenly overnight disappears. Just have the belief that you can do this.
Breathe: When you pay attention to your breathing, it helps you centre you and your body, and it commits the body to self-healing.
That’s our recipe for better health and better skin.
But before we finish, we would like to give you the mantra written by the wonderful Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. As you think of the words and say them to yourself, breathe slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth. We find these words beneficial when used at night when we may be troubled by the worries of the day, and can’t get to sleep.
If you adopt this little mantra, and say it every night, you may be amazed at what happens.
Breathing in: I have arrived.
Out: I am home.
In: I am solid.
Out: I am free.
In: In the ultimate, I dwell.
Repeat it over and over until you fall asleep. In time, you will begin to understand what the words mean to you – and to all of us – and how they play a big part in keeping us healthy.
