A heating engineer’s bad knees. Can they be fixed?

Our director Jim has always been happy to work on his home. Plumbing, plastering, carpentry, even tiling the bathroom. Recently, he decided to upgrade his heating system and changed to a heat-exchanger, solar panels and a large, incredibly well insulated hot water tank that will keep it warm for all of 36 hours. He was pleased to see the last of our gas boiler and do our bit in becoming carbon neutral in the UK.

A bunch of excellent tradesmen from a super company completed everything in five days. He was really pleased about this. The men worked more than eight hours each day, and they treated his home like their own. They cleaned up after all the mess they made lifting floors, cutting holes in ceilings and all sorts of complicated pipework and new radiators.

One day at lunchtime, one of the guys was telling Jim that he had terrible pain after surgery, while another said that sore hips and knees was part of the work of being a heating engineer. He wasn’t a regular user of a computer and when he went home to his wife, his reply to her question if he had a good day, was often “my knee hurts.” He went on the say that “my knees ache at night when I am resting in bed, when one would think that sore knees would settle as I sleep.”

Thus it was that his wife had to scour the internet for the best solutions for knee pain. Find a cure, if there was one for aching knees when resting. Every day, she was on the look-out for what was best for knee joint pain. The problem was that apart from pills for sore hips and knees, that she didn’t trust, when she searched for what was best for knee joint pain, a topical lotion she could rely on, she couldn’t find anything sensible. Something that would actually work. And then one day, she came across a small family company called Essence of Egypt.

She was fascinated that Essence of Egypt, which is based in the UK, made everything by hand. She liked that. It wasn’t a factory with robots, just real people who cared about their customers, and where everything was natural and hand-made in the United Kingdom. The fact that the natural products were good for the skin and that the active ingredients in everything Essence of Egypt makes contain essential oils, was intriguing. What was of more interest was that a friend had told her that Joint Ease made by this company was good for knee pain and arthritis. And so, it was just a week ago when she bought a bottle of Joint Ease for her husband, and he used it as a remedy for aching knees. And here he was – remarkably, at the home of the person who made it.

A million to one chance indeed!

Jim thanked the man and explained that he had spent many hours on his knees, on the floor of the homes that his wife and him had built and repaired as they raised their family, and now as they enjoyed their later years. He knew from his own personal experience that going to bed with a pain behind knee and calf, was the result of hard labour. There was no such thing as a cure for sore knees, indeed he opined that “cure” was big word that he should never use. However, Jim had often helped his own aching knees by applying some Joint Ease that he massaged into the painful parts around them; and for there, he usually slept well.

Jim said: “My knees will never be fixed, because they are worn out. It’s as simple as that. Added to the fact that I hear that recovery from knee surgery can be complex, that the results are not always perfect; and that in any case, I am scared of the surgeon’s knife, allows that I myself will happily stay using Joint Ease as and when I need it.

“It’s cooling eases the pain and improves my mobility, and that’s all that I ask for. I also like the fact that it’s not greasy, and it absorbs quickly. That it leaves my skin soft and gentle, is a bonus. The plant-based essential oils it contains, are the clever little soldiers that do all the work. But that’s a story for another day.”
